Besides posting images, videos, and reels, you can chat with your Instagram friends. You can start individual or group chats on Instagram to stay in touch with your buddies. And just like other messaging apps, you get to see the typing status of the other person.

But some users complain about the typing indicator not showing up on Instagram. If you are also facing the same problem on your iPhone, here are some solutions to fix when the typing status is not showing on Instagram on your iPhone.
1. Disable Less Mobile Data Usage
Let us start with situations when you are outside and have to rely on mobile data for using Instagram. Since most users have daily mobile data limits, Instagram lets you enable less mobile data usage by the app on your iPhone. The first solution that we recommend is disabling this feature on the app.
Step 1: Open Instagram app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap on the profile icon at the bottom-right corner.

Step 3: Tap the hamburger menu icon at the top-right corner and select Settings and Privacy.

Step 4: Scroll down and tap on Data Usage and Media Quality.

Step 5: Tap the toggle next to Use Less Mobile Data to disable the feature.

Step 6: Return to the home screen of Instagram and chat with a friend to check if the problem is solved.
2. Switch From Mobile Data to Wi-Fi
The next solution that we recommend if you can’t see when someone is typing is trying to switch from Mobile Data to Wi-Fi on your iPhone. Your mobile data speeds might not be great at your current location. So it is better to switch to a Wi-Fi network that ensures stable internet connectivity. You can also check your internet speed to be rest assured.
3. Check if Your Contact Has Enabled Activity Status
Instagram lets you turn off Activity Status, i.e., hide the last seen from your contact. But this might also be the reason behind typing indicator not showing up. So we suggest asking your contact to enable Activity Status. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open Instagram app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap the profile icon at the bottom-right corner.

Step 3: Tap the hamburger menu icon at the top-right corner and select Settings and Privacy.

Step 4: Scroll down and select Messages and Story Replies.

Step 5: Tap on Show Activity Status.

Step 6: Tap the toggle next to Activity Status to enable it.

Go back to the chats and check if the problem is solved.
4. Disable Airplane Mode
Using Airplane Mode is one of the biggest reasons the Instagram typing indicator is not working on your iPhone. So you need to check with your contact if Airplane Mode is turned off. You can also check the same on your iPhone and disable Airplane Mode if it is turned on.

5. Enable Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh is meant to keep the app updated while it runs in the background on your iPhone. You can check if the same has been enabled for Instagram on your iPhone in case you still can’t see the typing indicator.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap on Instagram.

Step 3: Tap the toggle next to Background App Refresh to enable it.

Step 4: Close Settings and open Instagram to check if the problem is solved.

6. Force Quit and Relaunch Instagram
You can try to force quit and relaunch Instagram to give the app a fresh start on your iPhone. This should also effectively help in solving the problem.
Step 1: On the home screen of your iPhone, swipe up and hold to reveal the background app windows.
Step 2: Swipe right to look for Instagram. Then swipe up to remove the app.

Step 3: Open Instagram again and check if the problem is solved.
