6 Ways to Fix Delayed WhatsApp Notifications on iPhone

Quick Tips
  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network instead of mobile data whenever available. This helps with a stable connection to receive notifications.
  • Turn on Airplane mode and turn it off to allow your phone to register to an available network.
  • Keep WhatsApp in the recent apps menu and don’t end the process. This allows the app to stay active in the background.

Fix 1: Disable Low Data Mode

While using a metered network connection or a mobile hotspot, your iPhone will automatically enable Low Data Mode. This mode prevents the apps from syncing in the background, leading to delayed notifications. It could also be the reason why you’re facing the Reconnecting issue on WhatsApp.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on Wi-Fi. Select the small blue circle with the ‘i’ icon next to the network the iPhone is connected to.

Step 2: Turn off the toggle next to Low Data Mode.

Fix 2: Disable Low Power Mode

Just like Low Data Mode, Low Power Mode also limits background activities and data usage in the background to save battery. Enabling Low Power Mode isn’t recommended unless you’re running really low on battery and want to save some juice for emergencies. Here’s how you can turn it off.

Step 1: Go to the Settings app on your iPhone and select Battery.

Step 2: Toggle off the Low Power Mode option right at the top of the screen.

Fix 3: Enable Background App Refresh for WhatsApp

iOS gives you an option to allow apps to refresh in the background even when they’re not in use. This helps apps push instant notifications even when you’re not actively using them, which is paramount for a messaging app like WhatsApp. Here’s how to enable background app refresh for WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to the bottom till you find WhatsApp. Tap on it.

Step 2: Enable the toggle next to Background App Refresh.

Tip: Toggling on background app refresh can also help with WhatsApp web sync issues.

Fix 4: Turn Off Any Focus Modes

Apple introduced Focus Modes with iOS 15 to block out unnecessary notifications during certain times of the day. If you’re working, you can disable personal notifications and vice-versa using Focus Modes. If you’ve enabled a specific Focus Mode that blocks out WhatsApp notifications, you will receive the notifications only when you disable that particular focus mode. Here’s how to do it.

Swipe down from the top to access the Control Center on your iPhone. Tap the Focus Mode toggle to disable any active Focus Mode.

Fix 5: Disable Notification Summary

Notification Summary arrived with iOS 15 and helps you manage your notifications. Notification Summary collects all your notifications and delivers them to you at a set time. If you’ve selected notifications from WhatsApp to be delivered as a part of your notifications summary, you will only receive them at the time you’ve set. Here’s how you can disable notifications summary on your iPhone.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and navigate to the Notifications option.

Step 2: Tap on Scheduled Summary. Turn off the toggle next to Scheduled Summary.

Fix 6: Reset Notifications Settings in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has an option to reset your notification preferences within the app. If your WhatsApp notifications are getting delayed despite following the above steps, try resetting the Notification settings inside the app. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone and tap on the Settings option in the row at the bottom. Select the Notifications option.

Step 2: Tap on Reset Notification Settings at the bottom of the screen. Select Reset once again when prompted.
