Telegram is one of the best WhatsApp alternatives out there. It’s the preferred choice for power users to create groups and channels and stay in touch with friends and family. While Telegram is feature-rich, it does feel bloated at times. Sometimes, Telegram gets stuck connecting, sending messages, or updating the chat in conversations and channels. The latter can be quite irritating and breaks the communication flow. Here are the best ways to fix Telegram stuck on updating.

Do you often open a Telegram chat, group, or channel to receive the ‘updating’ status? You can’t sync and see the latest message due to the error. Let’s troubleshoot the problem once and for all.
1. Check Network Connection
You need to first check the network connection on your phone. If your iPhone or Android has internet issues, your Telegram conversations may get stuck at updating. You should temporarily enable the Airplane mode on your phone and disable it after some time to reset the network.
If you face the same on Windows or Mac, connect to a high-speed Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and try again.
2. Check Telegram Servers
If the Telegram servers are down, you can’t use any app’s services on your phone. Your chats are stuck at updating, and you can’t receive or send new messages. You can visit Downdetector and search for Telegram to confirm the outage.
3. Force Stop Telegram (Android)
Does Telegram often act up on your Android phone? You can force stop the app and try loading the chats again.
Step 1: Long-press on the Telegram app icon to open the app info menu.
Step 2: Select Force stop.

4. Clear Telegram Cache (Android)
Telegram collects cache in the background to improve the app performance. When the app collects a corrupt cache, you may end up with unintended glitches in the app. It’s time to clear the Telegram cache on your phone.
Step 1: Open the Telegram app info menu (check the steps above).
Step 2: Select ‘Storage and cache’ and tap Clear Cache.

5. Disable Proxy
Telegram supports proxy servers. It lets you hide the IP address by connecting to a proxy server. If one of the connected proxy servers is facing issues, your chats may get stuck at updating. Here’s how to disable the proxy on Telegram.
Step 1: Open Telegram and tap the hamburger menu at the top. Select Settings.

Step 2: Select Data and Storage. Tap Proxy Settings.

Step 3: Disable the option from the following menu.

If you use Telegram desktop apps, use the steps below to disable proxy.
Step 1: Open Telegram on the desktop and go to Settings.

Step 2: Select Data and Storage. Click Use Proxy.

Step 3: Turn off the Proxy server.

6. Disable VPN
Telegram service is banned in several regions. When you use a VPN network to connect to another country’s server, the app may not work as expected. You should disable the VPN on your phone or the desktop and try again.
7. Reset Network Settings
Does your phone still have network connection problems? It causes issues on Telegram and all the installed apps on your phone. It’s time to reset network settings.
iPhone
Step 1: Open Settings and scroll to General.
Step 2: Tap ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’.

Step 3: Select Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.

Android
Step 1: Open the Settings on your Android and scroll to System.
Step 2: Select Reset options.

Step 3: Tap ‘Reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi’ and confirm the same.

8. Disable Data Saver Mode
An active data saver mode on your phone can interfere with the Telegram app functions on your phone. You should disable data saver mode on your phone.
iPhone
Step 1: Launch Settings and select Mobile services.

Step 2: Select your primary SIM and disable the ‘Low Data Mode’ toggle.

Android
Step 1: Head to the Settings on your Android. Select Network and internet.

Step 2: Tap Data saver and disable the same.
