5 Ways to Fix Telegram Stuck on Updating or Connecting

Quick Tips
  • Check if Telegram servers are down. If yes, wait it out.
  • Try updating the Telegram app directly from the App Store or Play Store. This may circumvent network connection-related issues.
  • If you’ve enabled Telegram Proxy settings, disable them to enable seamless updates.

Basic Fixes

  • Check Telegram servers: If the Telegram servers are down, you can’t use any app’s services on your phone. To confirm the outage, visit Downdetector and search for Telegram.
  • Force restart Telegram: This should fix any temporary bug-related issue, so force close and restart the app.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data: To resolve any discrepancy in the network connection, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Disable Data Saver Mode: An active data saver mode on your phone can interfere with the Telegram app functions on your phone. Disable data saver mode on your phone.
  • Uninstall and reinstall: When none of the tricks work, reinstall the app to sync the latest conversations and messages.

Fix 1: Enable VPN and Update the App

If you have a handy and dependable VPN connection at your disposal, try this hack. Restart the device, connect to a VPN, and update the app.

The VPN interference can not only fix temporary network glitches but also circumvent geographic or other related restrictions, preventing Telegram from updating.

Fix 2: Update the Telegram App

This may sound a bit odd, but it has worked for many users. So, it’s worth a shot. Maybe the Telegram app is stuck on updating while connecting to the App Store or Play Store.

So, force quit the app. Open the App Store/Play Store directly and update the app from here. Once the update is completed successfully, you should be able to use Telegram without hitches.

Fix 3: Clear Telegram Cache (Android)

Telegram collects cache in the background to improve the app’s performance. When the app collects a corrupt cache, you may experience unintended glitches in the app. It’s time to clear the Telegram cache on your phone.

Step 1: Long-press the Telegram app > tap the i icon.

Step 2: Select Storage and cache > tap Clear cache.

Fix 4: Disable Proxy

Telegram supports proxy servers. It lets you hide the IP address by connecting to a proxy server. If one of the connected proxy servers is facing issues, your chats may get stuck at updating. Here’s how to disable the proxy on Telegram.

Step 1: Open Telegram > tap the hamburger menu at the top > select Settings.

Step 2: Select Data and Storage > tap Proxy Settings.

Step 3: Disable the option from the following menu.

Fix 5: Reset Network Settings

Does your phone still have network connection problems? It causes issues on Telegram and all the installed apps on your phone. It’s time to reset network settings.

On iPhone

Step 1: Open Settings. Scroll to General.

Step 2: Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.

Step 3: Select Reset > tap Reset Network Settings.

On Android

Step 1: Open the Settings > scroll to System.

Step 2: Select Reset options.

Step 3: Tap Reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and confirm the same.

While Telegram is feature-rich, it feels bloated at times. Sometimes, Telegram gets stuck connecting, sending messages, or updating the chat in conversations and channels. These fixes will help you resolve most Telegram-related issues.
