What Happens When You Free Up Space in Google Photos

Quick Tips
  • The Free Up Space option in Google Photos deletes all photos and videos safely backed up to the cloud.
  • If you’ve selected the upload quality as compressed, you will lose the original-quality photos when they are deleted from your device.
  • You can always view the photos and download them again from Google Photos.

What Happens on Using Free Up Space in Google Photos?

Whenever you use the Free Up Space option in Google Photos, all photos and videos safely backed up to the cloud are removed from your device’s local storage.

  • This means that you can’t access the photos offline. You will not be able to view these photos on your gallery apps.
  • As the photos are backed up on the cloud, you can connect your device to the internet and view them on Google Photos.

Note: If photos are uploading in compressed quality, using the Free Up Space option deletes the original quality photos from your device, leaving only the compressed versions on Google Photos. Change the upload quality to original if you want to back up high-quality photos.
