So, you’re settling down to play the Steam game you’ve been waiting ages for, only to have Steam tell you that your hard drive doesn’t have enough space. From Steam’s side, this has been a persistent problem for years, but the fault can also lie with your device.
In this article, we’ll discuss how to fix the error regardless.
Not Enough Free Disk Space Steam Bug Fix
The biggest reason for this error message lies with the Steam app’s cache. Over time, the cache can become filled with all sorts of game files and data, reducing the amount of hard drive space you need to actually play your game. Fixing this error is very simple:
Step 1. In the Menu Bar, click “Steam” and then “Settings.”

Step 2. In the new window, click “Downloads” in the sidebar.

Step 3. Navigate down to the “Clear Download Cache” subsection and click the “Clear Cache” button.
Step 4. The cache will be cleared, and the app will restart.
Step 5. Try installing your game again and see if there’s enough space.
Using the Wrong Target Drive
If you’re using one or more hard drives, Steam might be installing games to the one without enough space. You can always choose your game’s target drive when installing, but if you want to change the default, do the following:
Step 1. Open “Settings” by clicking on the Steam button in the Menu.
Step 2. Navigate to “Storage” in the sidebar of the Settings menu.

Step 3. You’ll see your default installation hard drive and what’s currently on it. To change to a different destination drive, click the drop-down menu at the top. Click “Add Drive” to add a new storage option to the list.

Step 4. Select the drive you want to use.
The Storage menu is also a handy way to uninstall other games if you need to free up space on a drive. After selecting the Steam game you want to delete, simply click the “Uninstall” button at the bottom of the screen.
Make More Space Than Needed
Steam games tend to need more space for their downloaded files than for the game itself once it’s been installed. This is especially true in the case of patches and updates. It’s good practice for both your PC’s performance and Steam to leave hard drive space open for Steam downloads and installation. Approximately 50GB extra is a good amount of space to keep open.
Uninstall Programs and Games
If Steam notifies you that you have no hard drive space, you can check it to verify. Take a look at the space needed for the title you want to install and compare it with the available space. If you don’t have enough space:
- Uninstall other Steam games and other PC programs you aren’t using. “Add or Remove Programs” is a great option found in Settings. You can also uninstall via Steam.
- The “Disk Cleanup” utility is also a great way to remove temporary files from your device. This can be accessed via the Search Bar in Windows.
- If you’re using a Mac, you can optimize storage via “System Settings” and “Storage” under the “General” menu.
