In some cases, your PC might start malfunctioning and refuse to shut down or show the toolbar to provide the shut down menu access. If you don’t want to shut down the PC manually through the power button (or it’s simply out of reach), there’s another way: a Windows 11 shut down shortcut.
However, the default shortcut only really works in specific scenarios, so here’s a shut down shortcut key Windows 11 that can be made and fit on the screen on toolbar.
The Stock Shut Down Shortcut Key: Windows 11 and Earlier Versions
In some cases, you can access the shut down menu solely through keyboard shortcuts with the sequence “Win + X” and then hit “U” twice to shut down your computer. Throughout that process, you’d see the start menu light up with all the shortcut keys.

In some cases, this shortcut won’t work or show up properly, or the system won’t respond to the input.
Here’s an alternative keyboard shortcut you can try.
Step 1. Hit “Win + M” keys to minimize all programs.
Step 2. Press “Alt + F4.” While this usually closes out of the currently running program, it will display a shut down dialog if you have no running programs or only minimized ones.

Step 3. Hit “Enter” and your PC will start shutting down since the “OK” option is preselected.
Alternatively, you can click on the dropdown and choose to restart, sign out, switch to a new user, or put the computer to sleep.
Making a Custom Windows 11 Shut Down Shortcut for Desktop
Since the stock shortcuts have a chance of not working, you can create a new custom shortcut for shutting down the PC. To do that, you’ll first need to make a desktop shortcut.
Step 1. Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and select “New” from the context menu.
Step 2. Choose “Shortcut” from the options.

Step 3. In the “Create Shortcut” dialog, enter “shutdown /s /t 0” in the location box, then click on “Next.”

Step 4. Enter a name for the shortcut as you see fit and click on “OK” to finish.
The new shortcut will appear on the desktop with the name you put in. You can double-click on the shortcut (or click and hit “Enter”), and the PC will start to shut down.
Customizing the Shortcut
The new desktop shortcut will have the default Windows icon for apps, so you might accidentally double-click on it.
Step 1. Right-click on the shortcut on the desktop and select “Properties.”
Step 2. Choose “Change Icon” on the dialog box.

Step 4. You will get an error message. Click on OK to move forward and you’ll be given a grid of icons to choose from, which are all the stock Windows icons.
Step 5. Select a distinctive icon, such as the old Windows XP power button, and click on “OK.”

Step 6. Click on “Apply” in the Properties menu to confirm the change and then “OK” to exit it.
Adding a Shut Down Shortcut Key Windows 11
With the new shortcut on the desktop, you can assign a shortcut key sequence to it. This will create another shortcut to shut down the PC.
Step 1. Right-click on the shortcut and hit “Properties.”
Step 2. The dialog opens on the “Shortcut” tab. Click into the “Shortcut key” field, then enter a sequence of keys that will be the shortcut. You need to press the keys simultaneously, such as “Shift + Alt + P.”

Step 3. Click on “Apply” to confirm the change, then on “OK.”
