How to Generate an OpenAI API Key

Over the last few months, OpenAI has managed to ignite the fire for the AI revolution, and it is indeed burning bright. If you are familiar with OpenAI’s products, especially ChatGPT, you have some good news. You can integrate supported products with GPT through OpenAI API Keys.

In this article, we’ll show you everything you need to know about OpenAI’s API Keys. We’ll also show you how to generate an OpenAI API Key. Further, we’ll also help you out if you have any problems using the API Key. Let’s begin.

What Is an OpenAI API Key

API stands for Application Programming Interface and is a technology that connects two pieces of software to interact with each other. This interaction will involve the transfer of data or information between the two. Using an API, the software can expand its functionality by making use of the elements and features of another connected software.

In simple terms, an API helps share the features of one software with another. For example, you can use ChatGPT with Siri and with Google Sheets by using the API key.

An API key is a unique identifier that authenticates and authorizes the use of an API. When you generate an OpenAI API key and add it to a program that wants to integrate GPT, the key contains details of your OpenAI account and remaining credits, to authorize and validate the use of the API but most importantly, also ensures that the software can access to GPT and ensures data transfer from the same.

In simple terms, adding an OpenAI API key to software permits the use of OpenAI’s products.

How to Get an OpenAI API Key

Here’s how you can generate and download an OpenAI API key. We have demonstrated the process on a web browser on Windows. However, the process remains similar on any other mobile or desktop device.

Note: Make sure you have enough credits left before you add an OpenAI API key to a program. The API key is linked to your account and can only access OpenAI’s services if there are enough remaining credits.

Step 1: Go to OpenAI’s website on your web browser.

Step 2: Log in with your OpenAI account or create one if you do not have an existing account.

Step 3: Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select ‘View API keys’.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Create New Secret key’ button. This will generate an API Key.

Step 5: You will get an option to name the API key and once it is previewed to you, click on the copy button.

Click on Copy API Key

Once you have copied the key, you can paste it onto the tool which requires the use of the key to access GPT or any other product of OpenAI.

However, if you are facing any issues regarding the API key, look at the following section.

How to Fix “Incorrect API Key Provided” for OpenAI

If you see the error message “Incorrect API Key Provided” on a program that is trying to access OpenAI’s services, here’s how you can fix the issue.

1. Clear Web Browser Cache

Your web browser stores data locally called cache, which stores data to quickly load up some elements in the web browser instead of retrieving them from the internet. However, a lot of cache can accumulate a few junk files which can be responsible for executing a few bugs.

Therefore, there is a good chance you can eliminate the issue that says your API key is incorrect once you clear the web browser cache. We’ve demonstrated the process to clear the cache on the desktop version of Chrome but the steps remain similar for other popular browsers on mobile and desktop as well.

Note: Your browsing and download history, cookies, and cache will be deleted from Google Chrome and unless selected, your passwords will not be deleted.

Step 1: Open Chrome (or any other browser of your choice) and click on the three dots icon on the toolbar. Select Settings.

Step 2: Click on ‘Privacy and security’.

Step 3: Select ‘Clear browsing data’.

Step 4: Click on the dropdown menu for the Time range and select the period for which you want to delete the browsing data.

Step 5: Now, click on Clear data.

2. Check if You Are Adding the Correct API Key

Make sure that there isn’t any mismatch between the API key you generated and the API key you pasted. The chances are that you might have selected and copied only a part of the API key before pasting it. Further, you might have accidentally entered a character in the API key. Therefore, try copying the API key carefully without pasting it.

Click on Copy API Key

3. Use the Same API Key Throughout

Ensure that you are using the same API key throughout the session. If you are using one API key while registering to a program/service, and use a different API key for another process in a session, you will receive the error message.

4. Retry the Request

This might sound rudimentary but your API key might not be accepted due to a minor glitch in the program, due to a bug, or any network issues. Therefore, refresh the browser tab and try entering the API key once again.

5. Wait It Out

Don’t forget that this is OpenAI’s first attempt at trying to make its products and services reach the masses on a mainstream level. Hence, it is susceptible to outages. And if OpenAI’s servers are down, you may receive an error message regarding your API key. So, wait for some time and OpenAI will certainly get their services up and running again.

OpenAI API Key Is Not Working: How to Fix It

If you are facing further issues despite entering the correct API key, here’s what you can do.

  • Ensure that there are enough credits in your OpenAI API account.
  • Make sure that the API Key has not been deleted.
  • Check your network connection.
  • Try refreshing or reinstalling the app or the program requesting the API key.

That is everything you need to know about OpenAI API keys. If you have any further questions, you can take a look at the FAQs below.

FAQs on OpenAI API Key

1. Are OpenAI API keys free?

Yes. OpenAI API keys are free to use. However, you need to have enough credits on your account to use OpenAI’s services.

2. Do all apps that use GPT require API keys?

Not all apps need you to manually enter the API key. Some apps that feature OpenAI’s services have the API directly integrated. However, apps that allow you to manually enter the API key provide you greater control over your data.

3. Why do some apps require you to manually enter the OpenAI API key?

If apps ask you to manually use the API key, the app uses OpenAI’s services through your account since the key is linked to it. This way, the apps can be kept at a lower cost or even free since the developer is not paying OpenAI for the API.

Use OpenAI’s Services Widely

OpenAI has opened up a wide range of possibilities, thanks to the provision of sharing the API. Big names like Slack and Snapchat have started using the API to integrate GPT and we’re excited and eager to see more apps use the same.
