When you first create your Facebook account, you need to type in your first and last name. While using your real name is encouraged, there may be times when you want to change or remove your last name on Facebook for privacy or personal reasons. Although it’s easier said than done.
Facebook offers many essential features like Dark Mode, hiding all posts, a restricted list, and more. However, it does not allow general users just to use their first name. Well, the good news is that you can hide your last name, but you’ll need to use a loophole. Let us show you how.
Note: Before proceeding, just keep in mind that removing your last name from your profile might make it hard for people to find you on Facebook
What is Facebook’s Name Change Policy
While changing your name and username on Facebook is not that challenging, it comes with a few rules and regulations. These rules are placed to maintain the authenticity and integrity of user profiles. So, even though troublesome at times, they are for our benefit.
- You can only change your name every 60 days.
- Frequent name changes can extend the waiting period to 120 days or even lead to account restriction or suspension
- The new name must adhere to Facebook’s name standards. So you can’t use
- Symbols, numbers, or punctuations.
- Unusual capitalization or repeating characters.
- Characters from multiple languages.
- A word or phrase instead of the name.
- Offensive or suggestive words.
Is There an Official Way to Remove Your Last Name on Facebook
Yes, you can fill up a form to request Facebook for a mononym account. However, the platform will only make an exception if you convince them that you don’t have a surname. If Facebook agrees, you can use just your first name for your Facebook profile.

Use VPN to Change Name on Facebook Without a Surname
If the above method doesn’t work for you, we also have a slightly complicated method to recommend. Basically, Facebook accepts exceptions to the last name rule for people of a particular region or religion who just use their first name.
So, users can use a trusted VPN or proxy browser settings to change their location to Indonesia and fool Facebook into allowing them to remove their last name.
Once the VPN connection is established and your location is successfully masked, follow the steps mentioned above to change the name.
Note: Previously, users have also hidden their last name by changing the language settings to Tamil. However, the method doesn’t work anymore.
Bye Bye, Last Name
Besides privacy concerns, we understand why Facebook doesn’t allow you to remove your last name from the profile. One of the platform’s USPs is that you can catch up with your old friends and colleagues. Now imagine searching for a friend and ending up with a list of people with no surname; wouldn’t that make life difficult?
But don’t worry; we can always help you make life as easy as a breeze. Share your social media or any tech-related query with us, and allow us to resolve those issues for you.
