Edge is a major upgrade over Microsoft’s previous browser, Internet Explorer, but that doesn’t mean it’s without occasional bugs and problems. Having multiple browser tabs on your Alt + Tab window isn’t a bug per se, but the clutter they can cause can certainly be annoying.
In this article, we’ll show you two ways to disable this feature.
How to Remove Edge Tabs From Alt + Tab in Two Different Ways
Having too many tabs open is a problem too many of us face, but having them spill over into the Alt + Tab window is another problem altogether. Thankfully, this is a pretty easy problem to tackle. Just to be safe, though, we’re going to provide two solutions:
Disable Multitasking
Windows 10 and 11 have a multitasking feature that makes it easier than ever to quickly glide between apps and their various windows and tabs. For a browser like Edge, many open tabs can become overwhelming quickly. Thankfully, you can disable this quite easily in Settings. Here’s what you need to do for Windows 10:
Step 1. Open Settings (Win + I) and select “System” from the sidebar.
Step 2. Scroll down until you reach “Multi-tasking” and select it.

Step 3. Under the “Alt + Tab” sub-group, click the dropdown menu.
Step 4. Choose “Open windows only.”

Step 5. Edge and other apps should now only display one window.
For Windows 11, the process is the same, although a few steps differ:
Step 1. Open Settings (Win + I) and choose “System” in the sidebar.
Step 2. Click the “Multitasking” window on the right.
Step 3. Click the dropdown menu next to “Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt + Tab” and select the “Don’t show tabs” option.
Step 4. You should now have one window per app on your Alt + Tab menu.
Disable via Regedit
The Registry Editor is the key directory on any PC where changes can be made. It’s also where many system settings can be broken, so caution is always advised when altering it. Regedit is a thorough way to disable multiple Edge tabs in the Alt + Tab menu for good, so if you’re feeling brave and up to the challenge, here’s what to do:
Step 1. Open the Run dialog (Win + R) and type “regedit” into the box.

Step 2. Instead of clicking “OK,” press (Ctrl + Shift + Enter) to open as an Administrator.
Step 3. In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following: “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.”

Step 4. Double-click on “MultiTaskingAltTabFilter” inside this folder to bring up a new window.

Step 5. Change the value under “Value Data” to your preferred amount. In this case, “0” will show up to 20 tabs, while “1” will show five, “2” three, and “3” will show none. Choose your preference and click “OK.”
Step 6. Restart your machine for the changes to take effect. You can change this amount at any time by going back into Registry Editor in the same way.
