Basic Fixes
- Use the Read All feature: Open the Messages app > three dots > select Messages > Read All.
- Force quit and relaunch: If the app has been running in the background for some time, this will give it a fresh start.
- Update iOS to update the Messages app: This will install the latest version, which should avoid this issue.
Fix 1: Enable Notification Badges Again
Every app on your iPhone shows a Notification Badge when you receive one. So, if you still see an incorrect badge notification count, try enabling these notifications again for the Messages app. Sometimes, re-enabling a feature can restore its normal functioning. Here’s how to do it on your iPhone.
Open Settings > Messages > Notifications > enable Badges.
Fix 2: Turn Off Repeat Alerts
It is not always possible to respond to a text message on your iPhone. That’s why Apple gives lets you enable Repeat Alerts. You can set the time after receiving a Repeat Alert as the app notification sound. However, the badge notification might reappear due to this alert for the Messages app. So, here’s how to turn off Repeat Alerts on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open Settings > Messages > Notifications.
Step 2: Select Customize Notifications > choose Repeat Alerts.

Step 3: Select Never to turn off Repeat Alerts.
Fix 3: Summon Siri to Read Your Messages
If the notification badge still shows a wrong count for the Messages app, summon Siri to read your messages and mark them as Read. This has worked for a few users. Pick up your iPhone and say, ‘Hey Siri, Read My Messages‘. Try this and see if the problem is solved.
Fix 4: Enable iMessage Again
You can try enabling the iMessage service again on your iPhone. This will load all your chats again and should solve the issue.
Open Settings > Messages > disable iMessage > enable iMessage again.
