How To Get Your iPhone Out of Recovery Mode

Ads by Google

Exit Recovery ModeSometimes, when trying to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch you might run into some unexpected errors that can leave your device stuck in either DFU or Recovery mode. The same can happen if you intentionally put your device in Recovery mode to solve an issue but for some reason then it stops responding just then.

If this ever happened to you and you want to know what to do to get your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch out of Recovery mode, you’ve come to the right place.

Follow the steps below to get your iPhone or other iOS device out of Recovery mode.

Step 1: Download the TinyUmbrella application. It is available for both the Mac and Windows PCs. According to the developer, the application supports even iOS 6, so any iOS device owner should be able to use it.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone in Recovery mode to your Mac or PC using its USB cable.

Step 3: Open TinyUmbrella and give it a few seconds until it recognizes your iPhone or other iOS device in Recovery mode.

Tiny Umbrella

Step 4: Once your iOS device in Recovery mode is recognized by TinyUmbrella, click on the button Exit Recovery located at the top right of TinyUmbrella’s window.

Exit Recovery mode

That’s it. Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch should be booting normally now and be ready to use in a few seconds.

Note: Also, when you opened TinyUmbrella, you should have noticed that the application also allows you to enter Recovery mode if needed. To enable this mode, simply click on the appropriate button.

If you have any other problems using this app or have some thoughts on it that you would like to share with us, head for the comments and let us know.

    Hi Alvaro,
I have a jailbroken (absinthe 2.04) 3GS that is stuck in recovery mode. Tiny Umbrella wont get it out, even in DFU mode using FIX RECOVERY. I tried RecBoot, but same problem, its like an endless loop. Any ideas how to fix the problem ?
I could just do a restore with Itunes, but then it will update to ios 6.01 and I wont be able to Jailbreak. I would like to stay on ios 5.1.1 until an untethered Jailbreak is available for ios 6.01.
Any help would be much appreciated as i’m stuck without a phone atm…

    Regards, Gibbo

This all sounded very promising…but I can’t get it to work for me. After clicking “Exit Recovery”, the iPhone screen does change to the just-an-apple-in-the-middle startup screen, but a second later reverts to the white-USB-cable-pointing-at-the-iTunes-logo screen. And nothing has changed. Any suggestions?

      the same thing for me.

    • andy says:

do u getany help buddy plz tell

    • By trial and error i got it to work, and it got my iphone 4s out of recovery mode that it had been stuck in for 2 days. itunes was no use at all.

When the TinyUmbrella window opens it will show your phone on the left, as a connected device. It gives it a number.

Click on that number and then you will be able to click on the ‘Exit Recovery’ button.

Once you do that, wait till the Apple logo appears on your phone, and immediately disconnect the phone from the computer.

That’s what worked for me. As usual, you do all this stuff at your own risk – I can’t guarantee it will work for you.

      • satya says:

      • Sarah says:

I followed Stuart’s instructions, and I got my iphone 4 out of recovery mode and all of my data, photos were all still there. Thank you Stuart!

      • adam says:

hi stuart, was just wondering if this could work on a jailbroken iphone 4s running 5.1.1. just so you should know, it got stuck in recovery mode after i tried upgrading to ios7

      • Chad says:

I have a iPhone 4s. I have been using it normally – never jailbroken. I updated to ios7 last night and today my phone has been stuck in recovery mode. Tiny Umbrella will only make the apple logo appear for a couple seconds but then it reverts right back to the iTunes logo with USB connecting to it. Anyone able to help? I am trying to get photos, contacts, etc off the phone, whereas iTunes just wants to restore everything and wipe it clean in order to get things working again.

        • Mel says:

Chad, I’m in the same boat that you are. Have you had any progress since?

          • Chad says:

No luck. I went to a local Apple store and the no help there. They basically said they would try what I had tried. I also tried using Tiny Umbrella on a PC with an older version of iTunes, and the iPhone screen it keep ping-ponging back and forth between the apple logo and the ITunes logo with USB connecting. I finally gave up and tried to restore the iPhone last night, but that did not even work. I am very disappointed ith how this attempt to upgrade to ios 7 has rendered my phone inoperable. I am calling Apple again today. They need to fix this or they need to replace it, or they may have just lost an iPhone customer.

            • Marty says:

I totally agree Chad! I have been a loyal customer and as told the tech on the ph today….these updates are eventually forced on us and in some random cases….it renders our iphones useless…..not a bright business practice! Have you anything new in the last 16 hours since u posted…..I am SOOOOO NOT happy right now with Apple and will go to an android if they don’t make this right….problem there is, they cud NOT care less!! good luck with resolving ur issues!!!

              • Rhoxann Witz says:

If your phone is in recovery mode you have no choice but to restore it. All the data on it is already lost if it is in recovery mode, you will have to restore it and when setting it up again at the end of the restore process your phone will restart and you will have to set it up again as you did when it was new. In the process you will be given the option to restore it from and iTunes or iCloud backup. If you have been backing up to iCloud choose that (be sure to plug your phone in to a wall charger as this will take hours to complete). If you haven’t been backing up to iCloud choose restore from iTunes backup, then restore from the backup you created the last time you synced your phone. If it won’t restore in recovery mode by connecting it to iTunes you will have to try putting it in DFU mode to restore it, as described here:

      • Hast Jaf says:

Hi there Stuart, I have tried your procedure many times consistently, however the same issue happens where my iPhone tends to snap back to the original recovery mode signal – connect to iTunes. My iPhone has not been Jailbroken therefore i’m in a confused state, as absolutely no software such as ‘TinyUmbrella’ works. Anything to resolve this?

      • Andy says:

        This trick worked for me!!

      • abhishek says:

Point mentioned as “Once you do that, wait till the Apple logo appears on your phone, and immediately disconnect the phone from the computer” is very appropriate, I also got it working that way only – if you keep the cable connected after showing apple logo, it’ll again start showing connect to iTunes logo.

      • John Deer says:

Just wanted to let you know even though this is an old thread , the “disconnect the phone from the computer when you see apple worked perfectly for me to kick me out of recovery on my iphone 5. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

FIXED!!!! For me anyway, and I hope for you!

So I tried to update to ios 7 and after downloading the software itunes tried to update my iPad 3. I recieved the error 3004 and was stuck in the “Connect to iTunes” screen and could not get out of it. Completely annoyed!

But then I remembered something from when I used to fiddle with iphones. I opened a program I had called TinyUmbrella, which can be used to force boot out of recovery mode (the “connect to itunes” screen).

My ipad was still connected to itunes and in recovery mode. I opened TinyUmbrella, selected my ipad (which was just shown by the serial number), then clicked “Exit Recovery” and BAM!!! It immediately kicked my out of the recovery screen and started my ipad back up to my home screen.

Now, my ipad was still on 6.1.3 since the update to ios 7 had failed. But I didn’t care, my ipad was fully functional again just like I left it before. Thank God for TinyUmbrella! Here’s the CNET link for TinyUmbrella if you need it:

I found this post, installed TinyUmbrella and within 3 minutes I have my phone back. I was very surprised that a simple solution (and downloading a program from a forum) worked so clean and easy. Thank you very much to the creators of this software, and to the poster of this thread for saving my iphone. I will be disabling Apple updates from now on lol

Hey all you people! Hey all you people! Hey all you people wont you listen to meeeeee!? Take Stuart Roberts’ advice. It worked for my ipad2. Download tiny umbrella.(yes you can do this with a windows computer) your device, if connected, should appear at the upper left side of the screen. click on exit recovery. Now your device should only show the the apple logo. Give it some time and your device will should be good to go. All your data should still be there as well.

Thanks for this great tip/tool! My wife’s iPhone 4S (not Jailbroken) was updated to iOS 7 several days ago and all of a sudden tonight it went into Recover Mode on it’s own. Using this tool (and Stuarts advice) I managed to get it back into normal operation mode.

  88. shankingkhan says:

    Follow My Steps,

Please do not try any software to get out of recovery mode on your iDevices etc.

Just connect your iPhone to computer,
    Open latest iTunes version
Just restore it from iTunes that’s it nothing is more trouble.

I updated my iPhone 4S which was on iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 7.0.3 thru wifi by going to settings and updating directly thru phone. After that my phone got struck on recovery mode (itunes & data cable symbol). I tried force restart, holding power+home button releasing buttons in different patterns but nothing helped.

iTunes was showing that your phone is in recovery mode and you need to restore to use it. I tried it by clicking on restore button also. But the same result everytime. I googled many posts tried force exit from recovery mode by tinyumbrella also. Using tinyumbrella exit recovery option, it rebooted and then iTunes automatically starts up ending me at the same stage everytime.

Finally, I managed to get back my phone in perfect condition by doing things as below.

NOTE – if you are doing a major update say from iOS 5 to iOS 6, iOS 6 to iOS 7, never use to update thru wifi. Always do major updates thru your pc only. Minor updates ( say 7.0.3 from 7.0 ) is ok thru wifi.

    4. Go to trusted websites like redmondipe, iclarified, etc locate your iOS firmware and download it to your PC.
    5. Now open iTunes. When it says to resotre your phone, press SHIFT(on your keyboard) + click on restore .
6.. Locate your iOS file and let it do the rest.

    Best of luck guys!!

This is the way I tried to get iPhone out of recovery mode:

Press down the Home and Power buttons on your iPhone until it shuts off.
Connect it to your computer with the USB cable.
Press and hold down the Home button.
Hold it down until iTunes says your device is entering recovery mode.
Now you should be able to Restore using iTunes.

My iPod went into recovery mode and i am wondering if there is a program or some way to get into safe mode without restoring it. I think that this will be able to fix it.I know exactly why my iPod is not booting up, and that is because , in ifile, i tried to change the gif image used as for the startup bootlogo that I had toggled. The logo was the android logo, i tried to change one of the images that ran with the gif to an image to me and it seemed to put my iPod into recovery mode. I need a way to get into my device and delete the tweak that is installed. do you know if there is a program out there, or some way?

Unless you has a back up in iTunes or iCloud, those data are gone.
Easy way if you have a back up somewhere, put the IP4S into DFU and load up iOS 7 and sync the back up.

I wouldn’t suggest to downgrade to iOS6, since you don’t have exp with this stuff. You can try if you want.
