While Gmail reigns consumer email scene, Outlook dominates the business and enterprise sector. Other email providers like Yahoo, AOL, and iCloud are small players compared to them. Frequent ads, unnecessary news add-ons, and a lack of innovative features have degraded the Yahoo experience. If you have moved from Yahoo to Gmail but don’t want to leave your existing emails behind, import your Yahoo emails to Gmail.

Gmail supports email and contacts import from all the popular email providers like Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, and iCloud. The service creates a dedicated folder for Yahoo and imports all the incoming emails to it. You no longer need to use cumbersome Yahoo email apps on the web and mobile. Let’s check it in action.
Import Yahoo Emails to Gmail
You need to use Gmail Web to import your Yahoo inbox. You can’t perform the same from Gmail mobile apps. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Visit Gmail on the web and sign in with your Google account details.
Step 2: Click the Settings gear in the top-right corner and open all settings.

Step 3: Select Accounts and Import at the top. Click ‘Import from another address.’

Step 4: Sign into your Yahoo email address.

Step 5: Click Continue.
Step 6: Select your Yahoo account.

Step 7: Enter the password from the following menu.

Step 8: Give necessary permissions to let the service read Yahoo profile, contacts, and email. Your authentication is successful. Close the current window.

Step 9: A new window opens and gives you relevant import options. You can import emails, contacts, and continue to import new emails for 30 days.

We recommend importing emails for the next 30 days, too. So that you have enough time to let your contacts, customers, employees, and clients know about your new Gmail address. Click Start import.
It may take several hours (sometimes up to 48 hours) to start seeing your imported messages in Gmail. You can close the tab and even the browser. Gmail continues the transfer process in the background.
As for Yahoo contacts, you need to visit the Google Contacts web version to check your imported contacts.
The trick above only moves messages, not folders or labels, from your Yahoo account. You need to organize them from scratch.
Manage Yahoo Emails in Gmail
After the Yahoo email import process is completed, Gmail creates a dedicated label to differentiate all the imported emails. You can expand the Labels menu from the sidebar and check your inbox.

Do note that your imported Yahoo emails count against the free Gmail storage. Google offers 15GB of Drive space that’s shared among Google Photos, Drive files, and Gmail emails. If you are importing thousands of emails from your Yahoo inbox, it may consume a large chunk of Drive space.
You may need to subscribe to one of the Google One plans or read our dedicated post to free up the Drive space.
How to Download Yahoo Emails
You can also save your Yahoo emails offline. If you want to download confidential Yahoo emails on an external drive, use the steps below.
Step 1: Open Gmail and select your Yahoo email label from the sidebar.
Step 2: Select an email you want to download. Click the three-dot menu.
Step 3: Select Download message.

Gmail downloads the email in the .EML format. You can repeat the same for all your private emails and create an offline copy on a hard drive. You don’t have to worry about any cyber-attack stealing your precious emails.
Stop Receiving New Yahoo Emails in Gmail
Gmail imports your Yahoo emails for 30 days. However, if you no longer wish to receive new Yahoo emails in your Gmail inbox, use the steps below to stop the behavior.
Step 1: Go to Gmail settings on the web (check the steps above).
Step 2: Move to Accounts and import.
Step 3: Click Stop beside your Yahoo email address.

Step 4: Confirm the same from the following menu.
Gmail removes your Yahoo email address from the same menu. The system doesn’t delete existing imported emails, though. It only stops syncing to receive new Yahoo emails.
Don’t Leave Your Yahoo Emails Behind
While moving from Yahoo to Gmail is a step in the right direction, you shouldn’t leave your relevant Yahoo emails behind. Unfortunately, you can’t transfer selected Yahoo emails to Gmail. The trick transfers all emails and contacts from Yahoo to Gmail.
