Not So Unlimited After All

While Google is still standing by its promise of offering free unlimited high-resolution image uploads with the Pixel 2 as well, the company has altered its strategy a bit.

Going forward users will get the same high-quality uploads but for a limited time.

Free, unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel to the end of 2020.

“Free, unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel to the end of 2020, and free, unlimited high-quality storage for photos taken with Pixel afterward,” Google has mentioned on the official product page.

As Reported, Google will allow unlimited uploads but with some restrictions.

Post 202o, Google will treat high-quality as 16-megapixel for images while for videos maximum resolution supported would be 1080p.

Any picture and video above the said resolution would automatically be downgraded and stored on Google servers.

Future of the Older Posts

From 2018 till the end of 2020 – that is two whole years, users will upload a lot of content. The biggest question that surfaces now is that what will happen t0o the content already uploaded using the devices?

There is no change to the photos you took before 2020 and you will always have access to those in original quality.

As Google told Engadget, “With Pixel 2 you get free, unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos uploaded by the end of 2020, and free, unlimited high-quality storage for photos uploaded afterward. After 2020, there is no change to the photos you took before 2020 and you will always have access to those in original quality”.

Therefore, all content uploaded before 2020 will remain as it is while the content uploaded later will get affected by the quality drop.

However, on the brighter side, Google has made provisions to offer best quality uploads even when the quality cap comes into effect. So, practically, there is nothing big to worry about.
