Reliance Jio took the telecom market in India by surprise with its value for money offerings and continues to do so. The latest addition is the update to Jio’s Rs 149 prepaid plan where the brand is promising to offer unlimited data access along with absolutely free voice calls and messages.
Earlier, Jio’s Rs 149 plan came with a validity of 28 days, during which users would get 2GB of high-speed 4G data along with free calling and messages.
However, since it’s a low-cost offering, the brand decided to bar data access once the 2GB data limit was exhausted. Following which, users would have to buy top-up vouchers to access additional data.
The 2GB FUP limit is valid for Jio Prime members only and for non-prime members, this data limit is reduced to 1GB.
Whats New in the New Rs 149 Plan?
According to the new update, users will continue to get the same benefits, including 2GB high-speed 4G data. Now, instead of disconnecting data access, users will continue to get unlimited data access at 64kbps.
While the users are free to use top-up vouchers to get high-speed data access, their access to data will not stop for the entire duration of their prepaid voucher’s validity.
Is it Really Beneficial?
While it is true that Reliance Jio is offering unlimited data access even after the FUP cap, the meager 64kbps speed might not be beneficial for most tasks.
With applications and websites getting more content heavy it is very difficult to sustain on a 64kbps connection.
64kbps speed after FUP cap might not be beneficial for most tasks
This is true in case of smartphones, however, there are services browsers like Opera that optimize content based on the network speeds. Therefore, users are not necessarily disconnected from the world wide web. Even Google’s very own Chrome browser optimizes websites for low-speed data connections.
In all, it is a welcome inclusion and users will benefit from this no matter if they cannot stream videos on Youtube.
