Xiaomi is all set to unveil its latest flagship android smartphone in India today. While there have been a ton of rumors floating around, Xiaomi has been tight-lipped about this new device. The only thing that has been revealed till now is that this new device will feature a dual camera setup and that it will fall under the flagship category.

Xiaomi Mi 5X Pink

While the initial guess was that Xiaomi will unveil the Mi 5X, it is likely not to happen. The Mi 5X is already available in China, featuring Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9. However, in its official invite, Xiaomi has clearly stated that it will be announcing its latest smartphone from a whole new series.

The launch event will take place in Delhi and will also be available via livestream that can be watched here.

Flagship Android One?

Google has been working on the Android One project for quite some time. With the second coming of Android One, Google wants to make sure that users get the best Android experience. Xiaomi’s new smartphone is likely to be based on Android One and could be the Xiaomi Mi A1 that was leaked on Geekbech a few days ago.

As revealed by the benchmarks, the Xiaomi Mi A1 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, octa-core processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. The device at the time of testing featured a dated version of Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system, which is likely to be upgraded to Android Oreo 8.0 at the time of launch.

Looking at the base specifications, the Mi A1 is quite similar to the Mi 5X which currently retails at RMB 1,499 in China or Rs 15,000 approximately in Indian currency.

If the rumors are to be believed, the new Xiaomi smartphone is likely to feature a dual 12 MP + 12 MP shooter at the back. Similar to the 5X, one of the lenses would be a normal unit, while the other would be a telephoto lens.

Why India?

Xiaomi has a huge presence in India and for devices like the Android One India is a perfect candidate. Looking at the track record, Xiaomi devices have been really successful, right from the budget device all the way to flagship devices as well. Looking at the new device, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is likely to feature a price tag of under Rs 20,000 because this is where Indian smartphone market sees maximum traction.
