Sony announced two smartphones at the IFA 2017, Berlin, tech event — the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact — which sport a new design and are going to be one of the first Sony devices to receive the Android Oreo update.

These devices are an updated version of the Xperia XZ and X Compact devices which were released last year. Both the devices are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and will run on Android Oreo out-of-the-box.

Alongside the release of these devices at IFA, Sony has also launched three headphones and a smart home speaker powered by Google Assistant.

Xperia XZ1 Specs

  • Display: The Xperia XZ1 features a 5.2-inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Processor: The device runs on octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor which clocks at 2.45GHz and is supported by Adreno 540 GPU
  • Memory and Storage: The Xperia XZ1 houses 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable via microSD card
  • Camera: The device sports a 19MP sensor on the rear camera and a 13MP sensor on the front camera.

The Xperia XZ1 comes in Moonlit Blue, Venus Pink, Warm Silver, and Black colors. The device will be available starting September 19 for $699.

Xperia XZ1 Compact Specs

  • Camera: The device sports a 19MP sensor on the rear camera and an 8MP sensor (wide-angle) on the front camera.
  • Battery: The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is backed by a 2700mAh battery unit charged via a USB Type-C port

The Xperia XZ1 Compact comes in Black, White Silver, Horizon Blue, and Twilight Pink colors. The device will be available starting October 4 for $599.

Sony claims that this device is the most compact flagship device as no other small device sports the Snapdragon 835 processor.

Both the devices are IP68 certified water and dust resistant which enables them to be submerged in up to 1.5-metres water for a maximum of 30 minutes.

They also sport Sony’s Motion Eye camera which allows videos to be taken at 960FPS and can be played back to create a super slow motion.

The devices also get the 3D Creator app, which allows users to scan an object, save a 3D image and then get it printed via a 3D printer.

Although the device will be launched with a fingerprint sensor, the US variant seems to lack the feature.
