Skype Lite, the slow-network optimised version of Skype by Microsoft has just received a very critical update. With this new update, the app would now be able to offer insightful updates based on your SMS information using SMS Insights.
Microsoft had launched Skype Lite for markets similar to India back in February this year. At that time a very interesting message sorting feature was baked into the app. Building upon that feature Microsoft has rolled-out another interesting feature for its app. Skype Lite would now be able to read your SMS messages and offer reports on important information that one should not miss.

“We created SMS Insights for Skype Lite with the Indian market needs in mind. We know users in India receive a vast quantity of information via SMS, and it is very easy to miss important information or due dates”, stated Microsoft.
Why Do You Need SMS Insights?
While there are many third party apps available that can replace your SMS application, Skype Lite with its latest feature would separate useful information for the junk and present it in an easy to use form.
On an average, any person who has a year older mobile number receives about 15-20 SMS messages per day. While not most but a vast majority of these SMS messages are junk or marketing messages. How do you differentiate between the good from the bad? Well, this is where Skype uses its machine learning and identifies all relevant information using SMS Insights. This could be regarding your purchases, payments or other critical info and presents it in form of insights.

Google Now, Walnut and several other apps are available in the market offering similar functionality but SMS Insights will offer it in a more refined manner.
Is the App Snooping on You?
While this is a legitimate concern and to get a more in-depth understanding of the SMS Insights feature, Guiding Tech contacted Microsoft and this what the company had to say about it.
Microsoft uses machine learning models to classify and extract relevant information from SMS.
“SMS Insights is designed to intelligently pull relevant information from your SMS messages and present it at a glance in smart categories such as financial, appointments or travel. Behind the scenes, Microsoft uses machine learning models to classify and extract relevant information from SMS on your phones. These models are run locally on users’ phones and completely automated. Full classification and categorization is done by machine learning algorithms locally on users’ phones”.
Microsoft has assured that all SMS data stays on the user’s device. The data is analyzed by the AI (Artifical Intelligence) engine, which runs on the device itself and interprets it.
For now, only Android users can use SMS Insights, while when and if iOS users will get this feature is something that Microsoft has not revealed yet.
