Sony has rolled out system software update 5.0 for PS4 which includes a family management system overhaul, 1080p60 broadcasting with PS4 Pro, improvements to messages, notification updates and more.
The update, codenamed NOBUNAGA, is currently being rolled out in the beta phase for the users selected to participate in the beta program. Beta users will receive an email with instruction on how to get started.
The current master/sub-account system is receiving a major overhaul and being rechristened the ‘Family on PlayStation Network’. This will make it easier to setup PSN accounts for children and customise parental control settings.
Friend List Management
Sony has replaced the ‘Custom Lists’ with ‘Favourite Groups’ tab within ‘Friends’, which allows users to create and edit custom lists of their friends — making it easier to manage friends and access specific groups.
Broadcast Feature Updates
The latest update brings broadcast updates for Communities, PlayStation VR and PlayStation 4 Pro.
Communities get their own broadcast live button which appears on PlayStation spectator screen. Clicking on the community button will redirect the user to the community page.
PlayStation Pro will now support 1090p 60fps streaming on Twitch.
Now users can share tracks from PlayStation Music via messages on PS4. PS4 users can listen directly to the shared track via the Quick Menu and those on mobile will be redirected to the Spotify app to check out the song.
The new update has also made it easy to leave groups. Just open up the ‘Options’ in the message list and select ‘Leave’ and then choose the ones you want to leave.
A new setting has been added to notifications which allows users to switch off pop-up notifications while watching a movie or TV show on the PS4. This setting is turned off by default. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Notifications’ and click on ‘Disable Pop-ups While Playing Video’.
Message previews on pop-up notifications can also be turned off via notification settings. Turning off message previews will hide the message senders’ online ID and display a generic user icon instead.
Users can also change the colour of the pop-up notification to either white or black.
Quick Menu Updates
Users will now be able to keep an eye on what’s happening like the progress of your game download/installation or new party invites can be directly accessed from under Notifications in the in-game Quick Menu.
‘Leave Party’ option has also been added to the Quick Menu which allows users to exit a party and go back to playing the game.
Users will also be greeted with a new system clock whenever they open the quick menu.
Virtual Surround Sound on PS VR
PlayStation VR now has added support for 5.1 and 7.1 channel virtual surround sound on headphones while watching Blu-rays and DVDs in Cinematic Mode.
Improved Tournaments Bracket Viewer
The tournament standings bracket viewer has been updated and now shows full tournament brackets for Single Elimination and Double Elimination tournaments on PS4.
System Language Additions
The following seven new system languages have been added to Sony PlayStation 4 with the latest update 5.0:
