Following the boost to the Internet consumption in India seen after Reliance Jio disrupted the telecom industry — adding north of 100 million users — the current internet population in India is somewhere in the region of 400 million.
According to a new study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), India will have more than 850 million online users by 2025.
The survey examined the changing behaviour of Indian consumers across more than 50 product categories through questionnaires and interviews with more than 10,000 consumers in 30 locations nationwide.
“While it took the country eight years to reach 250 million 3G connections, Reliance Jio 4G network added 100 million connections in just seven months,” said the survey.
The study also estimated that by 2020, half of the internet population in India will be located in rural areas and about 40 percent of those users will be women.
“Digital’s impact is becoming pervasive across all consumer segments. This breaks the earlier trend in the country when the initial digital consumers were male, millennial and mostly metro-based,” the survey noted.
India’s digitally influenced spending, which currently stands around $50 million will increase ten times to $500 million by 2025, the study pointed.
“This will account for 30 per cent to 35 per cent of all retail sales by 2025,” the survey found.
Another survey earlier this year conducted by Cisco, titled ‘Visual Networking Index (VNI) Complete Forecast’, pointed out that the internet population in India will increase to 829 million by 2021 and the total number of networked devices will go up to 2 billion, up from 1.4 billion in 2016.
While these studies and surveys can keep estimating the growth of internet users in India, it’s an inarguable fact that with the development of technology and increasing affordability, the growth of internet users in India is inevitable.
And as and when major disruptions such as Reliance Jio occur in the tech industry, it’ll give another boost which might even take the number of total internet users to north of a billion.
