The Internet Now Has Over 330 Million Registered Domains

Since the advent of commercial Internet, the world has seen immense growth especially in the modes of communicating with each other and connecting to different cultures worldwide and today we’ve grown to 330.6 million registered domains on the internet.

Now, while all of these domains might not have been turned into a website, and some might have been taken down at some point, but even if half of them have made it, they account for a very big number.

In the first quarter of 2017 itself, 1.3 million domains were added to the internet. Domain name registrations have also seen a steady growth with the current rate at 3.7 percent year-on-year.

According to VeriSign, a global leader in domain names and internet security, 1.3 million domain name registrations across the globe translates to a growth rate of 0.4 per cent over the fourth quarter of 2016.

“The .com and .net TLDs, together, had about 143.6 million domain name registrations in the domain name base in the first quarter of 2017. This represents a 0.8 per cent increase year-over-year,” the firm said in a statement on Thursday.

“As of March 31, 2017, the .com domain name base totalled 128.4 million domain name registrations while the .net domain name base totalled 15.2 million domain name registrations,” it added.

While it’s wonderful to see the growing number of people joining the internet and the boom in the number and quality of websites and apps, the current issue of net neutrality and the threat to privacy and security of users is a growing concern.

In addition to that, propaganda based news, cyber bullying and the spread of extremist and terrorism-related content is also on the rise.

Tech giants like Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Google and many more companies are working towards curbing all these nuisances from the internet and make it a better place for all the new users on the Internet.
