Kaspersky Lab has just announced a free antivirus program which anyone can download and install on their PC. Named as the Kaspersky Free, it is essentially a basic version of the company’s premium antivirus programs.
In a launch post, the company’s founder Eugene Kaspersky revealed that the Kaspersky Free was being tested out since the last one and a half years in some selected regions. He clarified that the free version would not compete with the paid antivirus programs of the company.
Eugene said, “In our paid-for versions, there are many extra features, like Parental Control, Online Payment Protection, and Secure Connection (VPN), which easily justify the $50 for premium protection.”
The Kaspersky Free is mainly targeted at users who can’t afford to pay $50 to buy a yearly antivirus program. As a result, they end up using a free program which comes loaded with advertisements and is not as much secure as a professional product. These individuals can now get the Kaspersky Free and enjoy an enterprise level protection without any annoying commercials.
While this move sounds a bit bad for the company revenue, Kaspersky actually has plans to benefit from it. It will use this exponentially increased database to enrich its anti-virus directory, which in return will boost up the efficiency of Kaspersky’s premium products.
The company clearly stated, “An increase in the number of installations of Kaspersky Free will positively affect the quality of protection of all users since the big data bases will have more numbers to work with to better hone the machine learning.”
Kaspersky Free Features Overview
The Kaspersky Free shall come with bare minimum features. The company will only offer these four levels of protection:
File Anti-Virus: This scans through all the files that are opened, saved or run on your computer.
Web Anti-Virus: With this, you can detect and prevent any virus or malware that entering from the internet. This also helps to stop dangerous scripts from running on your PC.
IM Anti-Virus: This filters your incoming and outgoing messages for infected files.
Mail Anti-Virus: It helps in filtering your emails for suspected virus or malware.
You won’t get access to Kaspersky’s firewall service and other extra features. However, the Kaspersky Free is claimed to be much lighter on resources than its premium siblings.
