Xiaomi Mi 5X and MIUI 9 to Launch Today: 10 Things to Know

Xiaomi is set to unveil its latest Mi 5X device in China on Wednesday for a rumoured CNY 1,999 and what’s even more exciting is the launch of Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 alongside the device.

Xiaomi has been teasing its Mi 5X device throughout the month and the device has also been a subject of numerous leaks and rumours, garnering more than 200,000 pre-bookings within 24 hours.

The Xiaomi Mi 5X will sport a dual-lens rear camera and will run on the company’s latest operating system, the MIUI 9. The device will come in three colours — Gold, Black and Rose Gold.

Xiaomi Mi 5X Specifications

  • Display: The Xiaomi Mi 5X comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display.
  • Processor: It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 or Snapdragon 660 chipset.
  • Memory and Storage: It comes in two variants of 4GB RAM alongwith 32GB of internal storage and 6GB RAM alongwith 64GB of internal storage.
  • Camera: The Xiaomi Mi 5X is tipped to come with two 12MP sensors for its dual-lens rear camera.
  • Battery and OS: The device is backed by a 3000 mAh battery

MIUI 9 Features

MIUI is Xiaomi’s custom user interface which is built on the stock Android supplied by Google. The MIUI 9 which is based on the latest Android Nougat operating system might house the following features.

  • Split Screen functionality: One of the most useful features introduced in Android in its latest Nougat update. Xiaomi is bringing that functionality to several of its compatible devices via the MIUI 9.
  • Improved Memory Management: Xiaomi has been working on improving the multitasking experience on its devices by enhancing its UI’s memory management in the MIUI 9.
  • Camera App Update: Xiaomi has been working to improve the quality of its stock camera app and users will in all likeliness witness a revamped camera app on all devices.
  • Snappier UI: Xiaomi will also be shedding unnecessary features of the MIUI 8 from the MIUI 9. These will include updates to features which slow down the device as well as removal of features which are rarely used by the users.
  • Smart Assistant: Xiaomi is rumoured to be working on developing its own smart assistant artificial intelligence powered by machine learning, which can assist users the same way Siri or Google Assistant do, barring the voice functionality which is still in its infancy.
