Samsung’s beloved Bixby has finally finished learning English. Starting today, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners across the United States can use the much awaited Bixby Voice functionality. The South Korean company is rolling out an OTA (Over the Air) update to all the S8 / S8+ in the US which will enable English voice recognition feature of the smart assistant.
With the new addition, Bixby will be able to recognize millions of voice commands in English. You can now trigger the digital assistant simply saying “Hi Bixby”, just you do with “Okay Google”.
Announcing this, Samsung’s Executive Vice President, Head of R&D, Software and Services of Mobile Communications Business, Injong Rhee said, “We want to offer a truly multimodal experience, so that users can interact with their phone in many different ways – through sight, touch, typing or voice – all of the most natural ways to interact with the world, available on your smartphone.”
Bixby is capable of answering a wide variety of questions, for example, “What is the time difference between New York and Los Angeles?” or “Where is the US capital?” and more. Samsung has stated that it will work alongside Google to provide the best possible responses to knowledge-based questions.
Some other features of Bixby include launching your desired app, reading messages aloud, bringing voice control in some third-party applications and so on.
Samsung has been running a beta-testing program for the Bixby for quite some time in the USA. Till date, over 100,000 Galaxy S8 and S8+ users have registered for the early access initiative. The South Korean company claims that this has substantially enriched its digital assistant as the beta testers have tried out more than 4 million voice commands.
The testing program has not only made Bixby’s response time faster but also improved its comprehension and vocabulary.
