Reliance Jio is in the news again, but this time for all the wrong reasons. Sensitive information belonging to millions of Jio users has been leaked publicly, and this could be one of the biggest such data breaches in the country.
It all started when a website named magicapk.com began making rounds on social media platforms like Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Reddit. The site claimed to provide the owner info of any Jio mobile number. We did try it ourselves and found out the data to be surprisingly accurate.
Magicapk.com is believed to have gone live before 6 pm IST (Indian Standard Time), Sunday, 9th July 2017. It started to reel under excessive number of visitors soon. However, the site still continued to provide user data about Jio SIM cards till 11 pm IST. After that, magicapk.com’s account got suspended and currently, the site is inaccessible.
According to reports from all over India, only name, e-mail address, region, and SIM activation date and timing has leaked to the public. Even though there is an option for Aadhaar Number, it has been left blank. However, as the other information is pretty accurate, there is high chance that the source also has Aadhaar info of Jio subscribers.
When The Wire contacted a Reliance Jio representative, the company responded by saying, “We have come across the unverified and unsubstantiated claims of the website and are investigating it. Prima facie, the data appears to be unauthentic. We want to assure our subscribers that their data is safe and maintained with the highest security. Data is only shared with authorities as per their requirement. We have informed law enforcement agencies about the claims of the website and will follow through to ensure strict action is taken.”
