Google Maps to Soon Show Status of Local Trains in Mumbai

Good news for Mumbaikars! Soon, all commuters in the city can check real time information of local trains on Google Maps.

The new feature comes after popular demand from commuters’ associations to provide real-time information on local train services to make commuting to work easier. However, the Western Railway authority is yet to approach Google with a formal request reportedly.

If the plan is acted upon, GPS systems might be needed to be placed in the motormen’s cabins of suburban trains. The authorities already have an app named Disha that provides information on trains, stations and platforms where the trains would be coming.

“The problem with Disha mobile application is that it is an offline mobile application and the current position of the trains cannot be determined by it. This is why we have decided to approach Google.” Western Railway Official was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times. Sources in the know of things also said that servers might be installed to determine the position

The WR authorities are also exploring the possibility of setting up servers to determine the position of the trains. But how they are going to work is still not clear.

“It will be a boon for passengers. Such innovative methods should be used for city’s suburban rail network,” Lata Argade, vice-president, Suburban Rail Passenger Federation, was quoted as saying.

Google currently advertises its live traffic updates and recommends to users to check traffic conditions before they leave work or home.
