Here is How to Link Aadhaar With PAN Card

The Government of India has issued a notification making it mandatory for the citizens to link their Aadhaar card number with their PAN in order to file tax returns, from July 1, 2017.

Although the Supreme Court has ruled for the new law, it has also mentioned that for the time being the cards which aren’t linked will not be deemed invalid.

The Ministry of Finance is hoping that by doing this, they will be able to rule out the possibility of a single person using multiple PAN cards for unique transactions or ID applications.

Currently, there are more than 25 crore PAN card holders and 111 crore Aadhaar card holders in India.

How to Link Aadhaar and PAN Cards?

Linking PAN card with the Aadhaar card is pretty easy and can be done even without logging into or registering to the website.

“The Income Tax Department has made it easy for taxpayers to link their PAN with Aadhaar. Responding to grievances of taxpayers regarding difficulties in linking PAN with Aadhaar their names did not match in both systems, the Department has come out with a simple solution now,” Central Board of Direct Taxes states.

Anyone who files taxes and wants to link their Aadhaar and PAN cards can start by opening the following website

Next, you need to find the ‘Link Aadhaar‘ option on the left-hand side panel of the website. Clicking on it will open a new window wherein you need to provide your PAN number, Aadhaar number and enter your name exactly as it is written on the Aadhaar card and click on ‘submit’.

You’ll also have to ensure that the date of birth and gender in both their cards are exactly the same. After the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) verifies your form, both of your cards will be linked.

It’s important to avoid any spelling mistakes, which could lead to the linking form being rejected. If there is a minor error mismatch in the Aadhaar name registered and provided by a person, a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the mobile registered with Aadhaar.

In case the name on Aadhaar and PAN card don’t match at all, the linking will fail and you’ll have to get your name changed in either of the cards.

Those who are log into their accounts on the website will need to head to ‘Profile settings’ and select ‘Aadhaar linking’. Your PAN details will be pre-populated but you’ll need to enter your Aadhaar number and name.
