Google Pixel has received universal acclaim for being the best Android smartphone of 2016 but even the best of them are susceptible to issues and it has been recently revealed that several devices have a microphone glitch.
The microphone bug can not be fixed via a software update as there seems to be a hiccup in the hardware and owners will have to return their devices to the company to resolve the issue.
Google will be recalling the devices shipped with faulty microphone hardware.
Google Pixel was launched in October 2016 with the best in line hardware and software — competing with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Apple iPhone 7.
Even though it costs a premium, the demand for the device is such that Google has been facing problems keeping up with it and has been criticised for the same on several occasions.
“We do believe this is a hardware issue, software updates will not fix it. We are taking additional steps to qualify refurbished phones to make sure they don’t have this mic problem,” Brian Rakowski, VP of Product Management, Google, stated in an official support forum.
The company representative pointed out that the devices manufactured in January and February won’t have this problem, but Google claims there is less than 1% chance that devices manufactured earlier might be affected.
The main cause of this problem seems to be ‘a hairline crack in the solder connection on the audio codec’. Owners of the affected Pixel devices are requested to return their devices and get a replacement at the point of purchase
“This will affect all three mics and may result in other issues with audio processing. Based on temperature changes or the way you hold the phone, the connection may be temporarily restored and the problems may go away,” Rakowski added.
This problem can also be caused by accidentally dropping the device, though no external damage might be visible.
Issues with major smartphones is no news and since Google will be replacing the affected devices whether you bought it directly from the company or from a retailer, this will only be a minor setback to the value of Pixel brand name.
