Evernote Employees Can Go Through Your Notes and it’s Creepy

One of the most popular mobile note services, Evernote, has added a clause to their recent privacy policy update which will surely give you the creeps if you’re at all concerned about your privacy.

According to the new privacy policy set out by Evernote, employees will be allowed to look into your notes for several reasons which we’ve listed below.

The new privacy policy is set to be effective starting January 23, 2017, and if you’re one of those who likes their privacy to remain as the word suggests, it might be time for you to look for alternatives to the note-jotting and sharing service.

“The latest update to the privacy policy allows some Evernote employees to exercise oversight of machine learning technologies applied to account content, for the purposes of developing and improving the Evernote service. While our computer systems do a pretty good job, sometimes a limited amount of human review is simply unavoidable in order to make sure everything is working exactly as it should,” Evernote’s privacy policy states.

When and Why Can Evernote Violate Your Privacy?

As the company lays down in its privacy policy:

  • Your privacy will be violated when Evernote believes that you don’t conform to their Terms of Service, or they ‘otherwise have an obligation to review your account Content’.
  • To troubleshoot any errors and improve the quality of their service.
  • To protect you against potential spam, malware and other security issues.
  • To protect the rights, property or personal safety of Evernote
  • While complying with legal obligations such as warrants and court orders.
  • The company also points out that while they’ll be going through your content, they’re ‘vigilantly protecting the privacy of your account content’ and will let you know if they’ve to ‘comply with a third party’s request for information about your account’.

While you can opt out of machine learning technologies implemented by Evernote, the company has strictly stated that there is no way for you to escape the human intervention.

You cannot opt out of employees looking at your content – Evernote.

You can always encrypt your content if you wish to, in order to avoid employees of Evernote from going through them, but why go through so much of trouble to safeguard your information? Rather opt for some other Note service.
