One of the most popular mobile games worldwide — Pokemon GO — is finally going to be officially launched in India, five months after making it to the global arenas, as Niantic partners with Reliance Jio.

The location-based augmented reality game was a hit worldwide and Indian gamers were playing it too via an APK file download, but now the game will be available for download through the app store.

Reliance Jio infocomm announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Niantic, the developers and publishers of the game, to launch Pokemon GO in India.

“We are delighted to parnter with Jio to launch Pokemon GO in India. It’s exciting to see Pokemon fans in India step out and explore their neighbourhoods in search of Pokemon and Jio’s disruptive high speed 4G LTE network will be an excellet way to experience the game,” said John Hanke, CEO and founder of Niantic.

This also comes as a smart move from the telecom service provider as hundreds and thousands of Reliance Digital stores and their partners will enjoy the benefits of being Pokemon Gyms or PokeStops in the country — hence inviting hordes of players to their premises.

All the Reliance Jio users have added advantage as, thanks to Jio’s Happy New Year offer, they’ll be able to play the game without incurring any data charges till March 31, 2016.

“With over 500 million downloads globally, we are excited to launch Pokemon GO officially in India on the Reliance Jio network. Our partnership with Niantic not only brings access to the Pokemon GO app but also opens the door to more opportunities for our customers to enjoy content on Jio’s one-of-a-kind mobile broadband network,” said Mathew Oommen, President, Reliance Jio.

Niantic has also announced that in spirit of the holiday, limited edition Pikachu will be available to catch as well as new baby Pokemon’s such as Pichu and Togpei will be made available.

The JioChat app has also been associated with the game — it’ll contain of a Pokemon GO-dedicated chatroom where gamers will be able to share tips and tricks to the game as well as hold contests and plan special events.

The nostalgia associated with the game due to animated series which went by the same name has been at an all time high ever since the July release of the game — as the game was propelled to the top of the Play Store charts in the first four hours of release.
