Reliance Jio broke onto the scene a few months back offering free voice calls and free internet services for its subscribers till the end of the year, but none of their telecom competitors budged. But now since Reliance has announced the Happy New Year offer, other telcos are feeling threatened.
In an unprecedented move, Jio started offering free services to new users and other telcos are facing the brunt of this decision as many people are adopting Jio as their new choice.
In the past few days, popular service providers have come up with free call and data offers.
Although Reliance’s services have been marred by poor network connection and slow internet speed, especially in densely populated areas, they have successfully managed to attract 50 million-plus subscribers to their fold.
The most prominent service providers who have either slashed their data charges or are offering free calls on their network include Airtel, Vodafone and Aircel.

Airtel Offers Free Calls and Limited 4G Data
So the telecom provider didn’t really go Jio’s way, held back a little and are going to provide unlimited voice calls alongwith some data for a fee. Airtel has come up with a two new plans to accommodate its existing customers.
The cheaper pack is priced at Rs.145 which will give you 300MB of 4G data and free local and STD calls within the Airtel network (Airtel-to-Airtel). This pack is valid for 28 days.
Another pack is priced at Rs.345 which will give the user 1GB of 4G data and free local and STD calls to any network in the country. This pack is also valid for 28 days.
Vodafone Offers Double Data at Existing Prices
Following into Jio’s footsteps (not really), Vodafone has doubled the data on its existing schemes over Rs. 255. Existing and new pre-paid users will now get double the 4G data they used to receive on their ongoing schemes.
So customers will now receive 2GB of 4G data for Rs.255 against the 1GB offered previously, 6GB for Rs. 459, 8GB for Rs.559, 20GB for Rs.999 and 40GB for Rs.1,999. All the plans will be valid for 28 days.
The company hasn’t announced any free call offers and are likely not to do that either as the Internet remains the main concern of most of the users.
Aircel’s Offer Shows Promise. Well, Not Really!
Aircel has launched one of the most tempting offers among these three telecom providers as they offer users unlimited internet and calling for 90 days at a price of Rs.148 (First Recharge).
Tempted? Don’t be, because the plan is more sugarcoated than a Snicker bar. Delving into the details, the plan is only applicable for Aircel customers in New Delhi (NCR).
The plan will provide you not with 4G, but unlimited 2G data and unlimited local and STD calls on Aircel network. Calls on other networks have been capped at 250 minutes worth per month.
The keyword ‘first recharge’ means that the users will have to pay extra money (Rs.50 worth of recharge) every consequent month, taking the total price of the package to Rs. 248.
None of these services is offering as much as Reliance has with its Happy New Year offer earlier this month, but they’re all trying to hold their ground and tempting its customers not to leave their service by providing offers that have been triggered due to the extended Jio offer.
