The Internet Archive is doing God’s work. Actually, the digital librarian’s work. It archives websites and programs for the greater good of humanity. So you can go back and see what the homepage of Google looked like all those years ago (Spoiler alert: surprisingly similar).

And now, the Internet Archive has done it again. Bringing thousands of DOS, Arcade and Console games from the 80’s and 90’s, right in your browser window.

More on emulation: Learn how to install emulators on PS Vita, how to play Nintendo DS games on your iPhone, and how to play old Nintendo Classic games on your Mac.

This means that not only will you be able to play DOS games like Prince of Persia, you can also play coin-based arcade and console games from yesteryear like Mortal Combat, Sonic the Hedgehog, and lots more.

The DOS Game Archive

Visit this page to check out the DOS based games. They’re being emulated in your browser, so loading will take some time. After that, the experience is pretty smooth. Given that the computer you’re using is dozens or hundreds of times faster than the computer from the 80’s (thank you Moore’s law), there should not be any performance issues.

If you do run into any problems, they’ll be code based. Check out the website’s FAQ for help.

Now, here are some of my favorite DOS games, the ones I remember playing on my dad’s office computer (we didn’t have a PC at home in the 90’s).

Dos Games Png
  • Prince Of Persia
  • Donkey Kong
  • Super Street Fighter II
  • Doom
  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • The Lion King

There are a lot more. More than two thousand of them actually. You’re bound to find your favorite childhood game here.

The Arcade Games

Arcade Games Png

Compared to what kids spent in Arcades, the spending on games on smartphones seems minuscule, even the ones with in-app purchases.

You can relive the glory of the claw by playing Pac-Man, Berzerk, Hangman, and more.

The Console Games

If you grew up with a console in the 80’s or the 90’s, well you were a lucky bugger, weren’t you.

Sega Console Games Png

Remember the feverous button presses, tilting your whole body along with the controller, getting angry, calling your brother a cheat and running off from the living room? Ah, Sunday mornings.

Some of the most frustrating and entertaining console games from the Atari and Sega era are available to play online.

Here are just some of them:

  • Mortal Kombat (the whole series)
  • Aladin
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Street Fighter
  • Contra (!!!)
  • Road Rash

What’s Your Favorite 90’s Game?

If you lived through the 90’s, you’re bound to have a favorite pixelated game. Is it Mortal Kombat? Contra, perhaps? Let us know in the comments below.
