SoundCloud’s new app for iPhone can win design awards. Everything from transitions to one-handed use is thought out well. And it looks stunning. But the new app doesn’t have offline support. You cannot download songs (even the ones made downloadable by the artist) to listen to later. It’s streaming or nothing.
Thankfully there are a couple of alternatives when it comes to downloading and playing songs from SoundCloud. The options are listed below.
Third Party Apps: Where the Party’s At
Third party SoundCloud apps for iOS seem to be all the rage. I found 2-3 apps that look exactly the same and work in the same manner, and they are all made by different developers. Here are some of them:
- Free Music Download – Mp3 Downloader for SoundCloud®
- Free Music Download and Player – MP3 Downloader & Manager Audio Files
- Free Music Downloader – Mp3 Download and Streamer for SoundCloud®
(Notice the subtle differences in the Apps’ names, virtually unidentifiable by a normal user)
And it goes on and on and on…
Free Music Download
In Free Music Download, songs are broken down by genres and you’ll see an iTunes Top 100 section up top to get to the most popular songs easily. Tapping a song starts immediate playback in the app’s music player.
When you search for a song, you’ll see a Downloadable section. Tapping the Download button instantly starts the download. There’s also a way to download a song while it’s being played. Tap the Share button and tap Download.
To make this app a music player you can actually use, there’s a playlist feature as well. You can add a song to a playlist using the Share button.
Go to the Files section to view your downloaded songs. The Playlists section can be used to organize and access playlists.
Too. Many. Ads. Every free SoundCloud downloader app I tried was laden with ads. So much so that it got frustrating – and when an app presented an offer of disabling ads in exchange of a “favorable” App Store review, I almost went for it. Here’s the thing, if you plan on using these apps frequently, it’ll be better if you upgrade to the pro version (usually $1.99).
Music Downloader Pro
Music Downloader Pro is an alternative to the apps listed previously. It’s also laden with ads but the UI is a little cleaner and easier to understand.
An Alternative To SoundCloud Downloaders
What if you want to download a free legally available song that’s not available on SoundCloud? You can’t rely on Safari or Chrome, they don’t let you download any kind of media, they just let you stream them.
An alternative to SoundCloud downloaders is a real downloader/browser. The problem is that you won’t be able to make playlists or play one song after the other, but you’ll be able to download any song from the internet.
For this you can try the two options listed below.
A. Mercury Browser
Mercury is a capable browser with a download manager built in. It allows multiple downloads, pause/resume, and has a built-in media player.
After downloading, just long press on a downloadable link, tap the Download link button and you’re done.
Downloader For iOS
Downloader for iOS is built for the sole purpose of downloading stuff from the internet. It works in the same way as Mercury only it has a lot more ads.
