Change Windows 7 Power Button Action to Hibernate or Sleep

More often than shutting down my laptop, I put it to hibernate or sleep. However, the default Shutdown action associated with the Start Menu Power Button (shown in the image below) intercepts my requirement and forces me to make that additional click each time. And sometimes I click it, in a hurry, only realizing later that I did not want to do that.

So, how do we resolve this trouble? We will change the action on the Power Button and ensure that we do not press that wrong button anymore. Here’s how.

Step 1: Right-click on the Windows taskbar and navigate to its Properties.

Taskbar Properties

Step 2: Move control to the tab for Start Menu and choose the desired option under Power button action. Click on Apply and Ok. The obvious option to choose from are Switch User, Log Off, Lock, Restart, Sleep, Hibernate and Shutdown.
