If you own a website, you would know that downtimes are something which tend to happen now and then. It could be due to a server problem or a sudden surge in traffic. Whatever may be the reason, you can’t avoid site downtimes 100%. And that’s the reason there are a number of website monitoring tools available.

Uptime Robot is one such tool that is web based and claims to monitor your website or blog every 5 minutes, and notifies you if it finds that the site is down. The cool thing about this tool is that it lets you add up to 50 sites and sends both email and SMS notifications for free.

How It Works

Uptime Robot checks the status code in website headers to monitor any problem. It checks all the status codes and if it gets a code of 400+ and 500+ then it makes several other checks for the next 3 minutes. After confirmation of downtime, it alerts you via email or SMS.

The tool is free and easy to use. It supports sites with both http and https protocols. You can add the sites you want to monitor, and add your email ID and phone number in the settings field on which you want to be alerted. The mobile service for the phone could be chosen from a drop down menu (it supports many countries..I could find mine as you can see in the screenshot below).
